237. Hampi, the land of pillared mantapas

Hampi, one of my favorite places to visit. When I think of Hampi, the capital of glorious Vijayanagara Empire, I think of a pillared mantapa (shelter). In my opinion, the pillared mantapa is the characteristic of Hampi.

Hampi is located in the boulder-strewn bare landscape. And each boulder, each ruin  speaks of art and architecture, story and glory of an Empire, and also the savage men who pillaged the city.

One of such structure which stands alone, high on a boulder. It might have seen the glorious days, with vigilant soldiers resting under it. Today, it stands high as a proof of man's capacity of senseless destruction and religious hatred.
