Qutb Minar, one of the very popular tourist attractions of Delhi is one of the masterpieces of muslim architecture in India. It is one of the popular and tallest minarets in India and in the world as well.Built with red sandstone and marble it stands high up 72.5m. The construction was started by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, first muslim ruler of Delhi, in 12th century and the soaring tower is best example of early Indo-islamic architecture. Surrounded by ruins of other medieval structures now it is UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The minar was hit by earthquakes and lightenings several times and was repaired by the subsequent rulers.
I visited Qutub Minar as a little kid.. but more than the Minar, I remember the Ashoka Pillar around which we tried to tie our hands for good luck!
